This I Believe:
NPR's long-running "This I Believe" series inspired our class to make our own series with which we narrated and created our own statement of personal belief. My personal belief was that music is what feeds the soul. This project, although intimate, taught us the importance of being able to tell a story.
Here's my podcast: This I believe
I was nine when music gave me chills for the first time. Until then, I had never been to a classical music performance before. I remember all the people, dressed up in suits and what not, shuffling to their seats as the lights in the packed auditorium began to dim. A spotlight suddenly shined, and Yo-Yo Ma stepped on stage. I was simply awestruck with his presence. He sat down, tuned his cello, and then began to play. It was Beethoven’s illustrious triple concerto for violin, piano, and cello. It was unlike anything I’d ever heard before. Something in the way he controlled his instrument was almost paralyzing. And then it happened. It was a euphoric feeling I cannot explain, and a sudden wave of ripples appeared on my skin. It was a feeling of true enlightenment. When he finished, he received a standing ovation. While the rest of the audience was admiring his performance, I on the other hand was yearning for more, and my life changed for the better. It was this moment when I realized that music would become my life, and something I simply could not live without. From then on, I desperately searched through music libraries, looking for music that would give me that feeling again. I would listen to The Beatles, Kanye West, Mozart, Sublime, really anything and everything. It didn’t matter the genre or artist, because it was that addictive feeling that I sought after. To me, music is more than just something that I hear. It’s a way of life, and a way to escape life. My name is Oren Adam, and I believe that music is what feeds the soul. This I believe.
